While the social networking component of the BSA website is a boon for promoting interactions among members, the opportunity for misuse presents significant liabilities for the organization. To minimize its risk to reputation and finances due to the misconduct, antisocial behavior, and/or criminal action of any member, the BSA plans to develop a practical and plainspoken social media policy. This policy will include a member's code of conduct for online communications that respects individual rights to privacy, ownership, and nondiscrimination. Guidelines will be established for email communications, posting entries to or comments on blogs and forums; posting and commenting on images; posting on walls; and publishing personal pages. The sharing of information and copyright issues will also be addressed.
