PREMATURE DEATH vs. PREMATURE AGING
Share |

In itself, premature death does not constitute aging. If a ten-year-old is hit and killed by a bus, we would not claim that the child aged prematurely. More to the point, there are several genetic diseases in which the affected person almost always dies in childhood. An otherwise healthy fetus can lack an enzyme so vital to life that once gestational support from the mother ends with birth, the newborn dies. The fact that the average age of death in Bloom’s syndrome is clearly lower than the average age of death among the general population does not tell us anything about aging, because we need to know why persons with Bloom’s syndrome die sooner than other people.
